The Social Anthropologist

I am a global nomad with a social conscience traveling the world taking in the sights, sounds and tastes of different societies and cultures. This is what i have discovered along the way.

HAITI

I was privileged enough to have been asked to visit Haiti a few weeks ago as a volunteer with the Edeyo Foundation  www.edeyo.org. The Edeyo Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization based in New York City, dedicated to improving the future for children in Haiti through education.

Edeyo first established a school in Bel-Air in 2007.  This school was completely destroyed in the earthquake of January 2010. Edeyo’s goal over the past two years has been to build a high-quality and sustainable community school for Bel-Air children, who live in one of the most underprivileged parts of Haiti’s impoverished capital city.

Members of the Edeyo team have conducted three field service trips since the earthquake. The first field service trip, in early March 2010, brought much needed relief and medical supplies to students and their families. The trip in late October 2010 delivered school supplies to the temporary school and investigated housing conditions of the students and teachers.
Our mission for this trip was to conduct medical and dental checks of over 300 students.We successfully accomplished this goal.

People often ask me if visiting Haiti changed my life. The simple answer is no it didn’t, it enriched it. I always new that I wanted to help people less fortunate than myself and my trip to Haiti showed me that I could add value in a tangible way. The trip was not life changing it was life affirming.
