The Social Anthropologist

I am a traveller with a social conscience taking in the sights, sounds and tastes of different societies and cultures. This is what i have discovered along the way.

Montauk

USA

When I moved to New York in 2009 I was lucky enough to be invited to the Hamptons with a friend. Upon arrival in East Hampton I was immediately turned off THE HAMPS when I saw that Dianne Von Furstenberg was being sold at the beach. After living for several years in Bondi Beach, Sydney, and walking around barefoot most of the time, wearing high heels to the beach was not that appealing.

Then I was introduced to Montauk. Montauk is a beautiful fishing village at the very end of long island with fantastic surf and expansive beaches. You can choose to eat your lobster roll from the sleek silver truck at the end of the beach with the masses or find an isolated beach off the beaten track.

Being only my second year in Montauk, apparently much has changed. The onset of more boutique hotels and upmarket restaurants have apparently seen the Hamptons crowd converging on Montauk at night. As long as I don’t have to wear high heels to the beach, and DVF does not pop up there, I love a bit of Montauk in the Summer.
