The Social Anthropologist

I am a traveller with a social conscience taking in the sights, sounds and tastes of different societies and cultures. This is what i have discovered along the way.

Turkey - Istanbul

Restaurants for the Evening

Zuma - Salhane Street No.7 Ortaköy

You can imagine my surprise when I discovered that one of my all time favorite restaurants in London was now in Istanbul, right next to our hotel. Renown for having some of the best and freshest Japanese food Zuma is ideally located on the Bospherous offering a breathtaking view of the river. The vibe is chic without pretention and for those wishing to kick on it is right next to some of the best clubs on the weekend like Angelique.

Zubeyir Ocakbaşı - İstiklal Ave, Bekar Str No.28 Beyoğlu

An avid lover of street meat, finding a kebab in Istanbul is not hard as kebab vendors appear on every corner but If you are looking for a restaurant where you can enjoy this famous turkish delicacy as more of a meal than a snack then look no further than Zubeyir. The central feature of this restaurant is its namesake, an Ocakbasi, a long hearth topped by a copper hood, where the kebabs are grilled over hardwood coals. The meze is delicious particularly the gavur dagı salad – a mix of greens, herbs and tomatoes in a pomegranate molasses dressing. The kebabs, as would be expected are exceptional the spicy minced lamb, the lamb chops and the lamb spare ribs are delic.

Asmalı Cavit - Asmalımescit Str, Beyoğlu

I was referred to Asmali by a Turkish friend and his recommendation was reenforced by an article in the New York Times reviewing it some months ago. Another hidden gem located in the Galata/Beyoglu area close to Taksim Square Asmali offers some of the best Mexe in a relaxed setting. It is always packed and is the ideal location to down a few bottles of Raki.

Bebek Balıkçışı - Cevdetpaşa Ave No.26 Bebek

This is a great fish restaurant with a good menu -sea bass was superb. The atmosphere and views are excellent. Service was very good also. However it is quite expensive so watch out.
